To begin with, logs are brought to a sawmill by trucks where they will be sorted by species and grade. After this, they will be brought to the debarker deck where their barks will be removed after which the logs will be transported to a loader/turner.
Then, the logs will undergo the primary breakdown process where they will be positioned in a moving carriage and sent through a single-edge band saw. This stage cuts the piece of wood into boards and cants or large timbers.
Afterwards, the secondary breakdown will edge out the initially cut boards then cut them to a certain width and length. Typically, this process is done using edger saws that basically square up the sides of the boards. Meanwhile, the cants will head for the gang saw section where they will be cut into boards before going back to the aforementioned edger equipment. After these, the newly edged boards will end up with the trimmer saws where they will be sliced to their correct lengths.
Once the logs have been made into boards that can be made into hardwood flooring or any other wooden products, sorting them according to their length and grade comes next. Afterwards, they are stored in air-dry sheds where they will be left to dry for 2 weeks to 3 months. However, another way to achieve the same effect is to put the wood stacks in dry kilns where they can be dried to a specific moisture level in as short as 7 days to 3 weeks.
Finally, the dried lumber will be transported to manufacturing firms and later be processed into wood products like hardwood flooring. Speaking of which, if you want to add such a feature in your residential structure, our company can install them for you!
